With a career spanning over a decade and a half, Lewis Hamilton‘s recent contract extension with Mercedes takes him into his forties. As the seven-time world champion prepares to enter this new chapter, he reflects on his remarkable journey with astonishment over his career’s longevity.
Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton sealed a contract extension, binding the seven-time champion to the team until the end of 2025. As Hamilton approaches his 38th birthday in January, this commitment means he’ll still be competing in Formula 1 at the age of 40. Remarkably, Hamilton’s performance continues to shine brightly despite the passage of time.
Lewis, when probed about his career’s longevity, affirmed, “Yeah, definitely.” He didn’t anticipate thriving at his age, saying, as reported by Silver Arrows.net, “I definitely didn’t think that I would be at the age that I am and feel the way that I do, physically and mentally and still love what I’m doing as much as I do.” The Briton added, “That’s something I’m incredibly grateful for.”
In the past two seasons, Hamilton faced challenges from his machinery, but he continued to extract maximum performance from his Mercedes. Notably, he has consistently outperformed his younger teammate, George Russell, this season, outshining him on Saturdays and Sundays.

Lewis Hamilton believes that there is nothing like the thrill the F1 offers
Hamilton expressed his fondness for the shared experience of both lows and highs in Formula 1, emphasizing, “There’s nothing like it.” He expressed his perspective, noting that many individuals tend to remain in their roles for extended periods, losing their passion along the way. However, he genuinely loves his work, saying, “I still love getting in the car.” Hamilton reiterated his love for racing and collaborating with his team, engineer Bono, and chasing the common goal.
His enduring career distinguishes him from other long-running sports figures, such as Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher, and Kimi Raikkonen, who took breaks during their tenures. Hamilton’s journey commenced in 2007, and unlike his counterparts, he never stepped away from the track.
Ironically, Hamilton had once mentioned that he didn’t anticipate competing in his forties. However, his new contract will see him race nearly to the age of 40, keeping the door open for a potential eighth championship bid in 2026. Currently occupying the fourth spot in the standings, Hamilton is in a fierce battle, challenging his former teammate, Alonso, for third place.
