The seven time World Champion had tried to overtake Fernando Alonso’s Alpine from the outside during the start of the race and despite the Spaniard giving him enough room, there was very little space for the Hamilton’s W13 and it was propelled into the air as he touched Alonso’s wheel. This caused technical problems in the Brit’s car, retiring him early from the race.

Were Alonso’s harsh comments towards Lewis Hamilton justified?

The race at the Spa-Francorchamp circuit last weekend was an eventful one. One such notable event that took place was Lewis Hamilton’s crash with two time World Champion Fernando Alonso. After the crash, the Spaniard was justifiably angry at Hamilton’s actions and blamed him for the crash, in one radio message he saidYeah! What an idiot! Closing the door from the outside, I mean, we had a mega start but this guy only knows how to start and drive in first.”

Hamilton has accepted responsibility for the crash and admits that he was at fault on track. His car has suffered a damage of 45g of vertical damage, giving his team and immense repair job before the next race. Mercedes strategist James Vowles talked about the crash in a YouTube video and stated “It was a large, large impact. The SDR recorder in the car measured 45G. That’s very big on a vertical load,” explained James.

The Belgian Grand Prix was a disastrous one for a driver such as Lewis Hamilton as the seven time World Champion, seems to be having a bad year since the start of this season with the car not being up to par with his usual standards. The Mercedes however seemed to have pace on that particular weekend and if Hamilton hadn’t retired he would have been able to secure a podium for the team. The crash and the missed chance seemed to have made last weekend a disappointing one for the 37 year old seven time World Champion.
