Lewis Hamilton with his latest contract signing with Ferrari, has spooled up speculations about his fellow Mercedes engineers following him to Maranello. The Briton has decided to leave his successful alliance with Mercedes after an eleven-year stint at the team and is now preparing to move to the Italian outfit by bringing a ‘team’ of race engineers along with him.
Recently, the bombshell event of Hamilton leaving Mercedes was announced by the seven-time champion, John Elkann (CEO of Ferrari) is taking various steps to ensure Hamilton’s integration with the team is a smooth process. Hamilton doesn’t want to repeat the mistake made by his previous rival Sebastian Vettel, who had left Red Bull for Ferrari but didn’t bring any key officials from Red Bull to form an environment around him.
It is expected that few of the Englishman’s close members would follow him surely. One such name thrown around is of Bono i.e. Peter Bonnington, people believe that Hamilton’s race engineer would surely follow him to the red outfit as Hamilton and Bono share a strong bond. This kind of ‘brain drain’ at Brackley could shake up the team and affect its performance in the long run, claims Formu1a.uno.
Why Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has started the F1 silly season?
It was expected by fans and the F1 pundits this year, that this season is going to be one of the ‘spicy’ ones in recent history because of the driver transfers that had been anticipated. Multiple drivers were out of contract after the end of this year and a shakeup was predicted across the paddock.
However, the silly season started way before the onset of racing in 2024, as Hamilton signed for the most successful team in the history of F1 and decided to leave his old alliance behind. Many drivers would be free agents from the 2025 season due to their contracts ending after the end of this season.
Carlos Sainz is now left without a seat, while Fernando Alonso is performing like he is still in his prime with the Aston Martin, such drivers on the market would create a lot of tension for the teams and drivers. This move has acted like a stack of dominos, and with the first piece falling, more dramatic driver moves should be anticipated in the coming few months.
