Liam Lawson made his Formula One debut with AlphaTauri, stepping in to replace the injured Daniel Ricciardo during the Dutch GP. The Superformula driver has remained the substitute driver since and is expected to stay until the Austin GP. The Kiwi driver is one of the contenders for a full-time AlphaTauri seat in 2024.

Lawson made headlines by outperforming Max Verstappen in the qualifying session at the Singapore GP and is reportedly close to getting demoted back to his role as reserve driver. His teammates Yuki Tsunoda and Ricciardo have secured the seat for one more season. Lawson has admitted ahead of the Japanese GP that he would be unhappy if he couldn’t land the seat for next season.

Looking ahead to the Suzuka GP, Lawson expressed his disappointment at the prospect of going back to a reserve driver role after being a Formula 1 driver. He said, as reported by Autosports.com, “I wouldn’t be happy to go back to being reserve, but obviously, I know how hard it is to get into Formula 1. And I understand that that can be really difficult sometimes. So obviously, what will happen, will happen,… I’m just trying to make the most of this.”

Liam Lawson is rumored to be exploring a move to Williams in 2024

Following Liam Lawson’s standout performance in Singapore, former F1 driver Karun Chandhok believes that Liam Lawson is leaving a strong impression in Formula 1. Chandhok also suggested that Williams should be considering Lawson for a seat in the 2024 season.

After the summer break, most Formula 1 teams have finalized their driver lineups for the 2024 season. However, there are still vacancies for one seat at Williams and one at AlphaTauri.

Taking note of the two available seats, Chandhok suggested that given Liam Lawson’s impressive rookie performance, Williams should consider signing him after Logan Sargeant’s disappointing performance this year.

Because, you know, Albon’s out-qualified Sargeant on every occasion, he has had scored all the points so far for Williams. If you are Williams, you should be shopping around and Liam Lawson has put himself on the market in a very good way,” the former F1 driver said.
