Max Verstappen in Imola
Max Verstappen claimed his first pole position of the 2022 season in Imola ahead of the first sprint race of the season. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished a close P2 while his teammate Carlos Sainz crashed out in Q2 but still managed to set a time to start P10.
Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell escaped to Q2 by the skin of their teeth as they avoided elimination qualifying P13 and P11. Meanwhile, the Mclarens of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo made it to Q3 and qualified P3 and P6.
The evening saw multiple Red Flags and eventually ended with one gifting the Dutchman a pole position. His teammate Sergio Perez only managed a P7 ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel. How F1 Twitter reacted to the Emilia Romagna GP Qualifying
Max Verstappen took the pole position as the qualifying session saw multiple Red Flags starting. The first came after Williams of Alex Albon could not set a time in Q1 after his brakes caught fire. Then Carlos Sainz slid and hit the barriers and was out of Qualification in Q2 itself. The Spaniard just signed a contract extension with Ferrari until the 2024 season.
Kevin Magnussen brought a short Red Flag after a spin at Acque Minerali in Q3 but avoided crashing into the barriers with some quick thinking. And Valtteri Bottas brought another one after getting stuck at Turn 16. The session ended with Lando Norris crashing into the barriers in the final few minutes of the day.
