The Ferrari Formula 1 team has been going through a pretty up-and-down 2023 season. They had a piece of machinery worth challenging Red Bull last year, but they have fallen massively backward during the ongoing campaign. Looking at the state of things at the Fred Vasseur-led team, the 1978 F1 World Champion, Mario Andretti has brutally bashed the outfit.
Ferrari, ahead of this year’s campaign, had high hopes of going after the World Championship; however, because of the timid performance output of the SF-23, they haven’t been able to make a big step forward in the right direction. Moreover, they have fallen a few steps backward, as the Maranello-based team is currently fourth in the Constructors standings.
Mario Andretti has been keeping close tabs on everything that’s been going on at Ferrari this year. While talking about them recently, he told Planet F1, “Ferrari needs to bring Montezemolo back. That’s my take on it. That’s my opinion. I feel so badly for them, both [Charles] and Carlos [Sainz]. He’s frustrated with what’s going on there at Ferrari.”
“It’s hard to put your finger on that because it seems like something, even strategically, they’re not making all the best decisions. That shows frustration to some degree, but the drivers somehow seem like they don’t have enough say in what’s going on.” Andretti has pointed out that Ferrari needs to bring back the former Ferrari and Fiat chairman Luca di Montezemolo to turn its fortunes around. He’s the guy who helped the team immensely during their 1990s slump.
Ferrari could come under pressure from McLaren F1
While Mario Andretti has called for the appointment of a certain personality to sort out the mess that Ferrari currently is in, the outfit has got more major concerns to deal with at the moment. As things stand, the Ferrari F1 team is fourth in the Constructors standings with 191 points.
However, it is not what the Tifosi expects from such an iconic brand, and the way the Woking-based McLaren team performed during the closing races of the first leg, it seems they will come in hot pursuit of Ferrari from Zandvoort onward. Lando Norris and Co. are currently fifth but have now got a car that is performing extraordinarily well.
Taking everything into account that has been discussed above, the second leg of the 2023 F1 season is going to be an extremely fascinating watch from the perspective of the Ferrari F1 team. The Italian outfit has got the resources to turn their season around, and Zandvoort would give a fair representation as to where they could be in the pecking order by the end of the season.
