Max Verstappen was involved in a nasty on-track tussle with Mercedes F1 driver George Russell at the Baku Street Circuit. A lot has been said about the incident, and former F1 driver Anthony Davidson has also recently come forward and talked about the incident. He has even given some valuable advice to the reigning F1 World Champion.
Anthony Davidson feels that Max Verstappen is brilliant everywhere during an F1 weekend but has got just one small area to improve in. While talking about the same, he added, “But I would say that’s the last thing now that Max has to just polish up, because he’s still a young driver, and he’s still getting better – which is quite worrying for the competition, because he’s so good.“
“It’s the one thing he now has to fix, I would say, and learn from – take a leaf out of Lewis’ book in many ways. When Lewis was in the dominant car, he would give up a position there on track to then get it back later on anyway, because he had the car to do it. Lewis would always see the bigger picture, play the long game. Davidson on one hand, has acknowledged the might of Max Verstappen on F1 tracks, but on the other, has advised the Dutchman to learn the art of going into on-track tussles from the 7-time F1 World Champion, Lewis Hamilton.
In Anthony Davidson’s opinion, Verstappen has to fine-tune his decision-making and not get himself into any unnecessary tussles. For this, he feels, Verstappen has to understand that he has got the best car on the grid this year, just like Lewis Hamilton had during Mercedes’s prime years, and even if someone overtakes him, he has got the machinery to take back the position.
Max Verstappen’s only competition in 2023 is Sergio Perez
The 2023 F1 season is four races down, and it has been made clear that none of the other F1 teams have got the weaponry to challenge Red Bull in 2023. Anthony Davidson is also well aware of this and said, “I think he has to understand the car and the advantage he has this year over the competition. His main focus is really Sergio Perez.”
Through his comments, he has referred to the reigning World Champion, Max Verstappen. He has asked him to focus on his teammate Sergio Perez rather than getting into unnecessary on-track tussles with the rest of the F1 drivers. Taking how the season has panned out so far under consideration, Davidson is on point in his assessment.
Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are tied in the 2023 F1 season regarding wins, and the latter is only 6 points behind the Dutchman. However, it is still early days, and Verstappen can stretch his lead in the upcoming races. For this to happen, he would need to stay focused and take Davidson’s advice into serious consideration.
