Max Verstappen has gone on to pull off what many thought was unachievable in today’s day and age. Ahead of the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, Max had already won eight races in a row and was hungry for more. Sebastian Vettel had set a record 10 years ago for the most consecutive race wins (9) and it hadn’t been touched since then until now. The Dutch lion took his 9th race victory in a row at Zandvoort.
Zandvoort was a bit of an all in one race with the various conditions and situations thrown at Max Verstappen. With the rain coming in early, Sergio Perez got the jump on Max by shifting to inters before him and led the race for a while until Max started to claw back. He even went on to make up 4 seconds in a lap. However, after getting glory at his home race, Max has stated that he is not thinking about the record.
In an interview, here is what he had to say. “I’ll think about it next week,” Verstappen said when asked if he was thinking about breaking the record. “The pressure is on to perform and of course, I am very happy with the win here. It is incredible, it wasn’t easy for us with the weather to make the right calls all the time, but I am incredibly proud,” he said. “I had goosebumps when they were playing the national anthem before the start, and even with the bad weather, the rain, the fans are still going at it so it is an incredible atmosphere,” he continued.
Max Verstappen has won 11 out of the 13 races this season
Verstappen and Red Bull have gone on to impress the whole paddock with their levels of dominance this season. Even after 13 races, Red Bull stands strong as they have won every single grand prix. While Sergio Perez has two wins under his belt, Max Verstappen has close to a dozen wins (11) this season. Max had won 15 races last year. It looks like that record could also be broken in 2023.
As Max Verstappen’s home race in Zandvoort comes to an end, all the focus will shift to Monza where all eyes will be on Charles Leclerc. The pressure is on the Monegasque driver, who had a horrific outing at Zandvoort. The Ferrari driver went on to retire from the race after getting floor damage from his contact with Oscar Piastri. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming races.
