Williams started the 2024 season on the back foot and is yet to score maiden points. However, the ongoing weekend in Australia has so far turned out to be tougher than expected as Alex Albon crashed his FW46 in FP1 after making a strong impact with the barriers. This led the Thai-British driver to jump into Logan Sargaent‘s car for the Australian GP qualifying session. Following this saga, Max Verstappen has commented on the issue and how he would have handled the situation if he was in the shoes of the American.
Williams was left in a peculiar position when Alex Albon crashed his car in FP1. Subsequently, this led the team to make the harsh decision to give Logan Sargeant‘s car to his teammate. The swap of drivers sparked controversies in the paddock, as people deemed the action as brutal for the American. This has now garnered the attention of Max Verstappen who has taken a jibe at the current situation.
In a humourous manner, Verstappen gave his perspective on the situation at the Grove-based team.
I understand it from the performance aspect, of course, but that doesn't change the fact that this obviously sucks for Logan. If that were to happen to me, I would completely flatten my car, so no one can drive.Max Verstappen said in an interview
The former three-time world champion stated that he feels for Sargeant and how he has been thrown under the bus. However, the Dutchman also jokingly said that if he knew that his car would be given to his teammate in a similar situation, he would have wrecked the car himself so no one could have participated in the race. Sargeant has willingly at the request of the Williams, given his car to Albon for the ongoing weekend.
Alex Albon insists atmosphere at Williams has suffered due to swap with Logan Sargeant
Williams only brought two chassis to the Australian GP weekend. Moreover, a warning was given to its driver pairing about the scarcity of spare chassis and to avoid the walls at the tricky circuit. However, the 28-year-old crashed his car on Friday but was given a second chance at the ongoing event by sacrificing Sargeant.
After qualifying, Albon took the time to dwell on the atmosphere at Williams.
A different feeling if I’m honest, I haven’t had this feeling. I’ve obviously crashed before in free practices and whatnot, but in a position like that, where you’re obviously taking over from your teammate, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone – at least not to Logan.Alex Albon said in an interview with Sky F1
The Thai-British driver admitted that the atmosphere within the team is not healthy. Moreover, the personnel on the team believe that due to Albon having a shunt with the barriers, Sargeant was dealt a body blow.
Despite this, the team would be hoping that the sacrifice of their second driver would not go in vain. Albon would also be hoping to score some points during tomorrow’s Australian Grand Prix. Also, he would want to pay back the favor to Sargeant for sitting out and letting him drive his car.
