“I was always taught that you have to respect what people have achieved in sport,” Max Verstappen responds to claim that Lewis Hamilton doesn’t use his name in interviews
Max Verstappen
2021’s championship battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton was one of the most intense in recent years, and its ending had quite a fallout. This was especially apparent between fans, where ‘debates’ (arguments) about the validity of Max Verstappen’s title still rage on, and even more so since the news about Red Bull’s budget cap breach broke through.
This season, however, there is no doubt. Max Verstappen has been gargantuan this year, having already taken 13th victories, and looking a good bet to break an all-time record. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, has been winless, even if that may yet change. It is curious to note that Hamilton has been conservative in his praise for the Dutchman, instead praising Red Bull.
Addressing this while in conversation with the Daily Mail, Verstappen said: “People have told me that he doesn’t use my name. I was always taught that you have to respect what people have achieved in sport. I have no problem with what Lewis has achieved.” and praised Lewis Hamilton: “He is one of the best ever.”
Max Verstappen acknowledges ‘the amazing job’ Hamilton has done, making it clear that it is always a combination of the car and the driver: “I know it is not only the car he has been driving. That helps. We all know that, but you still have to beat your team-mate and Lewis has done that consistently. I think you have to acknowledge the person has done an amazing job as well.”
Will Max Verstappen respond to Fernando Alonso’s title-worth claim?
Recently, Fernando Alonso had conjured up an internet storm after claiming that Max Verstappen‘s titles are worth more than Lewis Hamilton’s titles, adding that it’s ‘different’ when you’re competing against your teammate. The response to that was what you can expect: Anger, mockery, and even hate. That is the Spaniard’s opinion, of course, and he is entitled to it.
While Fernando Alonso later came out to clarify his statement, taking to Twitter to say: “Please, all the titles are amazing, well deserved and inspiring. Incomparable to each other and let’s enjoy champions and legends of our current time. Tired of the continuous search for headlines. Let’s enjoy them.” Lewis Hamilton has appeared to respond to that claim.
Lewis Hamilton posted a widely circulated image of him and Alonso, from back when they were teammates at McLaren. That image is from the podium of the 2007 United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis, with Lewis Hamilton on the top step, with a hand on Fernando Alonso’s shoulder. It remains to be seen if Max Verstappen will respond to that claim himself, but it is rather unlikely.
