Nearly 15 months have elapsed since the tumultuous title decider at Abu Dhabi in 2021, which witnessed Lewis Hamilton’s title aspirations slip away after a grave “human error” cost him his record-breaking eighth world championship to Max Verstappen’s debut title. Recently, Hamilton’s supporters have sprung into action and started a petition on change.org to rectify what they call injustice and restore the coveted title to their idol.
The F1 Twitter family is presently buzzing after a Lewis Hamilton fan account called “Bear#TeamLH” tweeted a tweet inviting his fellow fans to join a change.org petition to reverse the results of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and award the championship to the Briton.
The 2021 season was one of the most controversial and cut-throat seasons in the history of Formula One, with Hamilton and Max Verstappen vying for supremacy until the very end. The finale at Abu Dhabi was a fitting culmination to this tense rivalry, but it was also one of the most controversial races in recent times. The drivers entered the race on equal footing, and Hamilton took the lead off Verstappen in the opening lap and held it until the penultimate lap.
A late safety car was deployed after Nicholas Latifi’s crash, nullifying Hamilton’s lead. Verstappen, who had opted for fresh soft tyres, was now in a handy position to overtake Hamilton. However, only the cars between Hamilton and Verstappen were allowed to unlap, giving the Dutchman a substantial advantage. In a stunning turn of events, Verstappen overtook Hamilton in the last lap and won the race and the championship.
F1 fandom divides yet again on Twitter over the Abu Dhabi title decider
Mercedes protested this decision by F1 to reset the last lap, which would have secured Hamilton his eighth title. However, F1 remained unmoved, and Verstappen was declared the 2021 champion. The incident was chalked up to “human error,” and the race director, Michael Masi, was promptly sacked.
This incident has left a deep scar on Hamilton’s fans and Mercedes’ supporters, who are still lamenting the loss of the championship. Verstappen’s fans have taken to mocking Hamilton’s supporters, with one fan stating, ‘I’m a Max fan, so i’l just donate a signature because…I feel sorry for ya’l. I really do.’ While some of Verstappen’s supporters have ridiculed this move, few neutrals have inquired if a joint championship is possible.
Even if the aforementioned petition is successful, the chances of Lewis Hamilton being bestowed with the championship crown are slim. Even if the race was nullified entirely, Max Verstappen would still be the champion. He would be ahead in the championship standings due to countback, despite having the same number of points as Hamilton. It is evident that Hamilton’s supporters are still reeling from the outcome of the race, and only time will tell if this petition holds any merit.
