During the F1 drivers’ silly season in 2022, all the fans thought that McLaren were taking a big gamble by recruiting a rookie like Oscar Piastri in place of Daniel Ricciardo. They were so confident of their faith in the young racer from Melbourne that they prematurely terminated their contract with eight-time Grand Prix winner Ricciardo and they even shelled out millions of dollars as his severance fee.
Piastri has had an illustrious career in the junior racing leagues, with a win in F3 as well as a Championship title in F2. Still, his performance in Formula One came under scrutiny because of the massive splash that he caused in the F1 world during his hiring. As an Alpine reserve driver, he was already announced as their new recruit once Fernando Alonso left the team, but he denied the offer and chose to side with Zak Brown’s papaya squad.
But investing in Oscar Piastri seems to have paid off. Boasting about his choice of picking the right F1 rookie for his team, CEO Zak Brown even called Piastri a future World Champion. And now, their Team Principal Andrea Stella put forth the points to prove Brown’s ambitious claim. He said, “Oscar has been impressive since we’ve had him in the car. He’s very mature, very focused, very technical. It’s a natural talent, a capability to learn, and then he’s a good person, with a set of values, ethics, ethos.”
Oscar Piastri wowed everyone with his masterful display at British GP

Making the McLaren stakeholders proud for placing their bet on a 22-year-old, Oscar Piastri got a points finish by pulling up in the 8th position at the Saudi Arabian GP. And he silenced all his critics with a brilliant third-place finish at the British GP. Proving that his succesful outing at Silverstone was not just beginner’s luck, the rookie almost repeated the feat at Hungaroring as he narrowly missed out on a podium and finished P4.
On the other hand, Oscar Piastri was quite frustrated at scoring an eighth spot in the Qualifying for the Dutch GP. He outlined how his expectations have changed now since he would have been elated at just getting into Q3 at the beginning of the season. In the end, he lost one spot and ended up in P9. But the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Piastri are expected to fare well at the upcoming Grand Prix in Monza.
