The Mercedes group has been supplying engines to various teams on the current grid for some time. McLaren has been getting their engines from them since 2021 and their current deal runs until the end of 2025. But as per the latest announcement, the Papaya and Mercedes will continue their fruitful partnership at least until 2030.

McLaren since the start of the 2023 F1 season, was on the lookout for potential engine suppliers after 2025, but after much deliberation, they have decided to continue with Mercedes. While a lot has already been said about it, McLaren CEO, Zak Brown has shed light on the reasoning behind their decision.

Mercedes-Benz has been a brilliant and reliable partner of the McLaren Formula 1 team. The extension signifies the confidence that our shareholders and the wider team have in their powertrains and the direction we're taking with them into the new era of regulations ahead. We have been successful together, both in the last three seasons and when they previously powered the team.

McLaren wants to get back to the top in F1

While McLaren has shown their faith in the capabilities of the Mercedes group, their main goal is to get back to fighting for the F1 world championship and hopefully, win it. The papaya team last won the coveted title in 2008 when Sir Lewis Hamilton was still driving for them.

Since then, it has been a struggle for them, but with impressive youth in their ranks in the form of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, McLaren firmly believes that they can fight for the F1 world championship in the upcoming years. Moreover, their latest engine deal extension shows that they have a proper plan in place to achieve their objectives.

During the ongoing F1 season, the woking-based-team is fighting for fourth place with Aston Martin, but come 2024, they would definitely want to make a big step forward and try to close the gap to the lights of Ferrari, Mercedes and the mighty Red Bull Formula 1 team.
