Mercedes in the bad books: FIA bans controversial front wing design by the German manufacturers ahead of F1 2023
Mercedes F1
The 2022 season of Formula 1 was quite a nightmare for the F1 team that has been touted as the most successful participant in the last decade of the sport. During the debut race in Bahrain, Mercedes got their first shock as Lewis Hamilton could not match up to the two Ferrari racers as their F1-75’s had a much greater pace when compared with the Briton’s W13. Moreover, the porpoising problems became the Stuttgart-based team’s biggest woe that kept them from seeing some good results throughout the season.
In the end, George Russell finally managed to bag a race win for Mercedes to save their face while Lewis Hamilton had his first winless season in his entire F1 career. And Mercedes, after ending 2021 on a high with the trophy for the best team in the grid, could only come third, after Red Bull and Ferrari, owing to their underperformance. But this has only driver their Team Principal Toto Wolff to claim that they will work hard and come back to their winning ways in the upcoming Championship.
But it seems that Mercedes are a bit out of luck since the FIA has recently banned their new front wing design which they had debuted at the United States GP this year. While they never used the new front wings during the Main Race due to a shortage of spare parts, it became the centre of a huge controversy as rival teams claimed that the wings gave Mercedes an undue advantage.
Mercedes will not get to use their new innovative front wing design in any of the 2023 races
When Mercedes came out with a new take on the conventional front wing design, the change was noticed by many of the rival teams and they spoke out in protest against the sudden introduction of the car part. And now, FIA has intervened in the back-and-forth between the teams. The authoritative body banned the controversial front wing design that the Stuttgart team had debuted at the United States Grand Prix.
As per their advancements at the Stuttgart garage, Mercedes are quite happy and they believe they are making some serious headway towards getting to the top of the points table next year. Having clinched the third spot in the Championship this year, they have gotten more wind tunnel time, and it only remains to be seen how they make use of it and strive to perform better than Red Bull and Ferrari to take away the trophy for the F1 Constructors’ Championship.
