Mercedes has taken the Formula 1 world by storm again, revealing a remarkable improvement package for their W14 model ahead of the highly anticipated Belgian GP. The focus of this upgrade centers on the W14’s sidepods, showcasing the team’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of performance. The hype started to build as images of Mercedes’ new sidepod inlet design circulated on social media.
Earlier this year, Mercedes already made waves with a significant upgrade package during the Monaco Grand Prix. One crucial part of that update was a complete rethinking of how they designed the sidepods. The new sidepod has a smoother and rounder air entrance, with a stronger downward airflow than their previous sidepods.
Additionally, the pod’s base now has a curved surface, which could result in more air flowing out toward the back of the car. Mercedes also introduced a brand-new low-downforce rear wing, specifically tailored to complement the unique characteristics of the track. This attention to detail exemplifies Mercedes’ commitment to optimizing every aspect of their car’s performance for each race.

Mercedes’ performance under the spotlight as the Belgian Grand Prix approaches
Before the summer break following the Belgian Grand Prix, the team had already hinted at forthcoming upgrades, but the details remained a mystery. F1 journalist Albert Fabrega has now shed light on the situation by sharing multiple photos on Twitter, confirming the inclusion of new sidepods, cooling inlets, and a fresh rear wing.
Interestingly, it has been observed that one of Mercedes’ clients, McLaren, currently possesses a superior package. Their car has demonstrated remarkable performance, surpassing the PU suppliers on tracks like Silverstone and Hungaroring, where drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri showcased their skills.
Moreover, earlier in the season, Aston Martin, with Fernando Alonso at the helm, temporarily outperformed Mercedes in the Constructor championship. However, after a string of podiums, Mercedes are 39 points behind their rivals in 3rd place. Lewis Hamilton, with 133 points, is placed fourth in the drivers’ championship, while his teammate George Russell sits in P5.
As the competition in the midfield heats up, all eyes will be on Mercedes to see how these upgrades will impact their performance. The Silver Arrows hope to regain their edge in the sprint weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix.
