Fernando Alonso‘s career in Formula 1 is impressive in of itself, as the Spaniard has won two world championships and won 33 races in an illustrious career. More impressive though is his continual form and consistency despite his age.

At 42, Alonso is the oldest driver on the grid, and Michael Schumacher‘s former teammate Rubens Barichello is taken aback by this. Barichello commended Alonso’s stupendous form despite his age, competing among the frontrunners at a time in his career where most drivers would be far past their prime.

That what Fernando does is spectacular . He is beautiful to look at. How is it possible that Alonso is still at the highest level at the age of 42?
Rubens Barichello said, as reported by formulapassion.it

Fernando Alonso has received praise for his consistency and motivation from all places, even his strongest rivals. Lewis Hamilton appreciated Alonso’s commitment to the sport, and the Asturian driver reciprocated, dubbing his former teammate inspiring to the F1 grid.

That is why it came as a surprise when 13-time Grand Prix winner David Coulthard picked the two seasoned motorsport veterans as teammates when asked which drivers he would pick if he were a team manager. Coulthard said that with a sufficient budget, he would pair the two to assure results.

I will put Lewis Hamilton in there for sure as someone who is just a winning machine when the vehicle is below him. And if money were not an issue and all those sorts of things, I would put Fernando alongside him.
David Coulthard said on the Formula For Success podcast

Alonso and Hamilton had an incredible intense enmity while in McLaren together in the 2007 season. They ended both their campaigns disastrously, level on points just one behind champion Kimi Raikkonen. Alonso missed out on a hatrick of titles and Hamilton failed to take the title in his rookie season.
