Mick Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher’s racing history in Austria have striking similarity

Mick Schumacher could potentially join Alpine

Michael Schumacher‘s son and Ralf Schumacher’s nephew Mick Schumacher is indeed one of the most talented newbie racers in the grid right now, but the German took some time to find his success in F1 after debuting with Haas last year. After a disappointing finish to his first year in Formula 1 with zero Championship points to his name, Mick started his 2022 campaign with renewed vigor as he knew he had to score some good points for his team now.

In 2022, Mick finally scored his first points as a Formula 1 racer after displaying a brilliant performance in the Silverstone Grand Prix. The 23-year-old scored 4 points and thus, he ended his long streak of missing out on the precious Championship points. But once Mick had tasted success, he wanted more of it. In the Austrian Grand Prix which followed the British GP, the German defended against Lewis Hamilton like a beast during the Sprint Race but still, he lost out on the P8 finish, and could not score points. But he finally got a P6 finish in the Main Race with 8 points to his name.

And quite interestingly, Mick’s uncle, Ralf Schumacher, had attained his first points in Austria in 1997 by getting a P6 finish and just like his nephew did in 2022, he started the race from the P9 spot in the grid.

Right at the beginning of this season, Mick’s new teammate Kevin Magnussen impressed everyone with his brilliant P5 finish in Bahrain, but Mick narrowly missed out on a points finish by a few milliseconds as he came 11th. Ever since then, Mick has tried to get his first-ever Championship points in F1 by performing to his best abilities, and finally, his big break came in the British Grand Prix as he scored 4 points by snatching the P8 spot. Mick extended his purple patch with another points finish in Austria, where he started in P9 and went on to score 8 points with a P6 finish.

Decades ago, in 1997, Ralf Schumacher had also scored his first points in Austria by starting from 9th in the grid and going up to P6. Now that these striking resemblances between Mick Schumacher and Ralf Schumacher’s racing results in Austria have come up, it must be said that the 23-year-old Haas racer is a deserving successor to his 7-time F1 World Champion father and 6-time Grand Prix Champion uncle.
