“Being Mercedes’ PR boy wasn’t doing him any good” – Fans give deadpan response to Mick Schumacher switching lanes from F1 to World Endurance Championship with Alpine
Mick Schumacher recently opted for a career change as he is slated to join Alpine's 6-member team to win the WEC.
Mick Schumacher has had to live up to the great expectations of his father Michael Schumacher‘s fans ever since he stepped into the motorsports business. As the heir to Germany’s racing royalty, Schumacher managed to impress everyone with his Formula 2 Championship victory in 2020 for Prema Racing. The next year, he graduated into F1 with a super license as Haas hired him for a seat beside Russian driver Nikita Mazepin.
Despite creating a buzz in the drivers’ market for being the heir to F1’s living legend Michael Schumacher, his two years at Guenther Steiner’s team were underwhelming. The German could only 12 career points from his 43 starts in the Grands Prix. Naturally, Steiner decided to sack Schumacher in favor of another German–Nico Hulkenberg–at the beginning of the 2023 season. And thus, Mick was relegated to a reserve driver role at Mercedes where his dedication towards improving the team’s results was commended by both the Silver Arrows drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
But being at Mercedes was not advancing Mick’s career chances in any way. He was simply participating in the PR campaigns for Toto Wolff’s team and doing work behind the scenes on the car. But now, a perfect opportunity has landed in Mick Schumacher’s lap that can bring him back to racing on the track. And the youngster has grabbed this chance to enter the World Endurance Championship with Alpine as a part of their 6-member squad for the WEC
Fans call out Mick Schumacher for being a ‘golden nepo baby’ as he fails to shine in Formula 1
Knowing that Williams is heavily supported by Mercedes, several fans though Mick might shift from his reserve role at the Brackley outfit to join Alex Albon in Logan Sargeant’s place for the 2024 season. Sargeant, despite being America’s only hope at the king class of motorsports, has failed to impress till now. But it has become clear than Mick stands no chance to join Williams since he has shifted to the Alpine team at WEC. He will be seen driving for the same squad as Ferdinand Habsburg, heir apparent to Austria’s royal family.
Here is what the fans have to say about Mick shifting geers in his career to leave F1 and join WEC:
After leaving Haas back in 2022, Mick Schumacher had said that the fire of Formula 1 burns in his heart and he would be back. But now that he has joined WEC, several fans believe he is looking to kickstart his career elsewhere. But the fact is Mick has also been renewed as Mercedes’ reserve driver for next year, so the German is not going anywhere that is far away from the F1 scene. Thus, it remains to be seen when Michael Schumacher’s son will come back to the sport where his father is regarded as the greatest of all time, if he returns at all.
