“My lap was pretty bad”, Sergio Perez gets self critical, sounds concerned ahead of big showdown with Max Verstappen at Miami GP

The Miami Grand Prix is just around the corner and Red Bull racer Sergio Perez is all-set to enter into what should be the most important weekend of his career. With a narrow gap of 6 points to the current Championship leader Max Verstappen, Perez stands the chance to overtake his teammate in the points table to get to the top of the standings. This will be the first time in Checo’s long F1 career spanning from 2011 when he will be leading the World Championship.

Unfortunately for the Mexican, the Friday Practice Sessions turned out to be quite upsetting. Sergio Perez simply felt uncomfortable in the Red Bull set-up, and that resulted in him finishing well off the pace of Max Verstappen during both FP-1 and FP-2. After attaining a resounding victory at the Azerbaijan GP just a week ago, Friday’s result were a punch in the gut for Checo. He was left lamenting his own poor performance, even after he had promised that he had his eyes on the World Championship, and Red Bull Boss Christian Horner had said the team will not hold back their drivers from fighting each other for the F1 2023 title.

In the first Practice Session in Miami, Sergio Perez drew up an 11th-place finish. In the following session, he could go up to the 4th spot in the rankings, but was still way behind Max Verstappen who had a 0.5s advantage over him. These results have gotten all of Perez’ fans worried since they are banking on him to win the Miami GP. But after the Practice Sessions, Perez took the blame on himself for the poor display. He said, “I haven’t had the greatest of Fridays, and my lap was also pretty bad.”

The Miami Grand Prix will be a tough test for Sergio Perez, but many stalwarts like two-time World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi have placed their bets on Checo for winning in Florida. Speaking on how he wants to improve after the Free Practice sessions, Sergio Perez said, “So there’s quite a bit more to come, and together with my driving, I’m not driving really well today. If I improve my driving, and get myself a bit more comfortable, I should be alright. It is these low grip conditions, especially with the things that we tried in FP1, but yeah, it is all small margins.

Ahead of the Miami GP, the FIA have announced that the DRS stretches will be shortened, making it more difficult for racers to overtake duri g the Main Race. This means that the Qualifying will play a big role in deciding whether Sergio Perez gets the opportunity to win the Miami Grand Prix. Thus, Checo needs to up his performance and get back to his winning attitude fast so that he can usurp Max Verstappen from his position at the top of the Championship standings.
