“My priority is to do the best for my team”: Christian Horner compares himself to Alex Ferguson on coping with public perception

Being at the lead of one of the foremost teams of Formula 1 has its perks, but the job also comes with many downsides to it. The Team Principal of Red Bull, Christian Horner, recently discussed how he copes with the public perception of him, and he also shed light on his work process to make sure the Milton-Keynnes-based team stays at the top of the standings for the Constructors’ Championship.
In recent years, Red Bull has done a phenomenal job by improving itself in terms of performance, race pace, and overall strategy–and the one person who deserves credit is Christian Horner. As the Briton has stayed with the team right from day one, he is chiefly responsible for Red Bull’s current position in F1.
But Christian Horner is not someone who minces his words when it comes to the rules and regulations that the FIA set for F1. The 48-year-old is one of the most opinionated persons in the paddocks, and is often heard voicing his concerns about the races and the other aspects of the sport. And then there is Horner’s roiling rivalry with fellow Team Principal Toto Wolff, the Chief of Mercedes. Christian Horner has time and again had some heated exchanges with Wolff, and that has earned both of them many admirers as well as critics. And now, Horner is sharing how he has stood the test of time in the F1 World, as he has been here since 2005.

Christian Horner talks about coping with public perception in Formula 1
Christian Horner has had one of the most rewarding careers of all Team Principals in history as he has led Red Bull to victory in the F1 Constructors’ World Championship a total of 4 times from 2010 to 2013. And during his tenure, two Red Bull racers have won the Drivers’ World Championship a whopping five times. Speaking of how he manages the media attention that comes with his job, Horner compared himself to Manchester United team manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who seldom came into the spotlight, yet attained huge glory for the team.
Christian Horner also said, “If it [the public perception] bothers you, you shouldn’t do the job. My job is to do the best I can for the team and the people I represent. If I look at someone like Sir Alex Ferguson, I doubt he ever worried about what perception other managers or people thought about him in the sport. My priority and my prerogative is to do the best I can for the people I represent.”
