Ever since the announcement of Lewis Hamilton‘s move to Ferrari for 2025 and beyond, there’s been a lot of talk about potential candidates to replace him at Mercedes. With two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso‘s contract with Aston Martin ending this season, he’s been tipped one of the main candidates for the seat.
Sky Sports F1 journalist Natalie Pinkham has come out recently to and spoken to F1 Nation about how Fernando Alonso‘s move to Mercedes could be a gamble. She also added how Mercedes and Aston Martin are not very different performance-wise this season, making it a horizontal move, and not guaranteeing better performance.
To leave Aston for Mercedes? I would say that's a gamble for Fernando. He's not guaranteed to do better at Mercedes than to stick around at Aston. And he's not always made the best decisions in his F1 career!Natalie Pinkham told F1 Nation.
Pinkham ended by saying how the Spaniard hasn’t made the best career decisions, mainly speaking of the Mclaren Honda days. With Toto Wolff already speaking about his admiration of the Spaniard, only time will tell if Alonso will be a driver for Mercedes next season.
Fred Ferret has the same opinion on Fernando Alonso’s possible move
L’Equipe journalist Fred Ferret was also asked about Fernando Alonso’s possible move to Mercedes in 2025. The French pundit believes that the Spaniard should definitely make the move as Mercedes makes the engine that Aston Martin uses and will definitely improve their chassis soon.
Of course, They have the same engine. If you move, you always take the team who has the engine. They are building the engine! At Mercedes, the problem is not the engine. In the end, they will cope with their chassis. I hope so…
Fred Ferret said.
Ferret ended by saying how this will also give Alonso the chance to represent another top team with his move to Mercedes. Fernando Alonso will definitely want to make sure Mercedes are improving before he decides to commit to them for 2025 because as of now there’s not much difference between them and Aston Martin.
