Toto Wolff, Mercedes CEO and Team principal, cleared the talks about the potential opening of the seat after this season when asked if he will offer the seat to Pierre Gasly. To which he answers in a clear no, for not only Gasly but anyone on the grid, and considers himself a lucky boss for the duo he has for the next season, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

Pierre Gasly has lost the potential opportunity for a move to Red Bull again after 2019 after the team gave the seat to Sergio Perez after a two-year contract extension, till the end of 2024. Gasly with no promotion will have to move out of his Alpha seat for a move to the top teams. Helmut Marko always mentioned Gasly has his driver till the end of 2023, but there could be a potential resignation anytime by the 26-year-old driver.

“No door is open for us, we have one strength, it’s the two guys. And if I looked at the driver market and what’s happening there, it would just distract me.” Toto Wolff said according to Motorsport.

Mercedes after 2023 could have a potential reopening of the seat for 2024, if the 37 years old, Lewis Hamilton plans to retire. Though the 7-time world champion still feels fit for the sport and to drive ahead of his age, he might not be available for Mercedes driver.

Toto Wolff still said it’s still too early for the talks of 2024 driving line up, “Are we starting talking 2024 contracts? In June 2022?” he said.

“No, we are in a happy place with Lewis. There is no doubt that we are embarking the season and the next one in a good place but it’s too early to discuss 2024. But having said that, I couldn’t wish for a better driver pairing.” Toto concluded.

The driving lineup for Ferrari and Red Bull is already set till 2024, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz for the Italian powerhouse and Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez for the Austrian team. Mercedes will still take time for the 2024 lineup.
