“No doubt he will be looking for good results”: Emerson Fittipaldi backs Nyck de Vries’ decision to join AlphaTauri

The Formula 1 2023 drivers’ market has been making the headlines ever since Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from F1 at the end of this season, many months ago. That created a domino effect as Fernando Alonso signed a deal to shift to Vettel’s seat at Aston Martin, leaving an empty space in Alpine. And Pierre Gasly, who has been driving for AlphaTauri since his mid-year demotion from Red Bull in 2019, has now announced his move to Alpine to take the two-time World Champion’s place.

Thus, AlphaTauri has now gotten an empty seat, and 2019 Formula 2 Champion and former Formula E title holder Nyck de Vries has finally received the chance to move into F1 with Red Bull’s sister team. While AlphaTauri is in the second-last spot in this season’s Constructors’ Championship with some below-expectations performances from Tsunoda and Gasly, they are expected to flourish in 2023. So, Emerson Fittipaldi believes deVries took the right decision when he signed the deal with AlphaTauri.

The Formula 1 legend believes that, holding hands with AlphaTauri, Nyck de Vries will go farther up the ranks in the highest league of motorsports, and will ultimately get into the right team to improve his chances to winning the Drivers’ Championship someday. Thus, he commended de Vries’ choice and predicted he will get great opportunities in the coming days, in an interview with Vegas Insider.

After his blasting performance at the 2019 Formula 2 Championship which earned him the winning trophy, Nyck de Vries could not come into F1 due to a lack of seats that year. But he shifted to Formula E and fared quite well there as he won the world title in 2021. Then he got a call to drive in Alex Albon‘s place in Williams at the Italian Grand Prix as the Thai-British racer had an appendicitis scare. De Vries scored 2 points in his first-ever F1 Grand Prix as a replacement driver and impressed all the recruiters, thus earning his seat at AlphaTauri.

Commenting on Nyck de Vries’ move to the Italian team, Fittipaldi said, “It’s a very good decision. He’s in a very good team under Franz Tost. It is a very special team. They love racing. He was very impressive in his race with Williams and I’m sure he’ll be looking towards racing with AlphaTauri next season. I’m sure he’s going to be looking for good results. No doubt about it.”

In fact, it seems that Franz Tost, the Head of the AlphaTauri Racing Team, has also got immense confidence in de Vries’ racing skills. Now, it only remains to be seen how the Dutch driver turns out to be, and how he helps in improving AlphaTauri’s position in the coming season.
