“Nobody in the team thinks that kind of deficit is acceptable,” Toto Wolff distraught with Mercedes’ lackluster quali outing

Toto Wolff after witnessing Mercedes’s utterly disappointing qualifying performance has indicated that they are not sure how to get performance from their livery regularly.
Toto Wolff has further stressed that the lackluster performance of the team has got nothing to do with its drivers but has got everything to do with the unpredictable behavior of the W13.
Wolff while dwelling over the team’s qualifying exploits said, “That was a very disappointing qualifying result, no matter that penalties for other cars tomorrow will push us up the grid.”
The tide has completely shifted for the Mercedes team as they were on pole in Hungary and just after a months break, they have found themselves almost two seconds behind the high-flying Red Bull team.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished their qualifying in P7 and P8 and this is certainly not where the team was hoping to end up, however, because of the engine penalties for Verstappen, Ocon, and, Leclerc the Mercedes duo has got a lifeline that has propelled them to P4 and P5 on the gird.
Toto Wolff and Mercedes are shocked after seeing the performance deficit at Spa
Mercedes during the turbo hybrid era were the top dogs of the sport, however, since the dawn of the new regulations, the team has gone backward and Spa qualifying was just another example of it.
Wolff while dwelling over the performance gap added, “Nobody in the team thinks that kind of deficit is acceptable, and even now after 14 races, we don’t understand how to consistently get performance out of this car. We seem to have a high drag on the straights and haven’t given either driver a balance this weekend to give them confidence,”
The 50-year-old has accepted that the team did not give its drivers a good balance for qualifying and that according to him cost the team a higher grid position for tomorrow’s race.
However, despite its disappointing outing, the team can take confidence from the fact that they have been able to make strong comebacks this season from unfavorable positions.
Mercedes wants a decent hall of points tomorrow and Wolff while stressing about it said, “Hopefully tomorrow we will have better race pace than we showed today, but we know that no matter our finishing positions, we have a lot of work ahead of us.”
Toto Wolff is hopeful of a solid result at the Belgian Grand Prix but believes that the team has to pull its socks up if they want to stay competitive during the rest of the 2022 F1 season.
