Nyck de Vries was ousted from Formula 1 mid-way through 2023. The Dutch driver was signed by Red Bull’s sister team AlphaTauri in hopes of nurturing the former Formula E champion for a potential drive for Milton Keynes. However, de Vries struggled massively to match teammate Yuki Tsunoda and was sacked before the start of the summer break. Now, the 28-year-old has admitted that the wounds have not healed yet.
De Vries revealed that it was painful to see his F1 career end on such a short note. The 28-year-old had ambitions of racing at the pinnacle of motorsport since his childhood. As such, it must’ve been hard for the Dutch driver to see it all fall apart. However, Nyck de Vries insisted that he had made peace with his F1 exit. The former F2 champion believed that it was time for a new chapter in his life.
Nyck de Vries told The Race, “Of course, it hurts to end things prematurely. It was something I’ve dreamed about for many years, but the way I kind of personally see it is that through life, you go through different phases and different chapters.” The Dutch driver took some time off after getting sacked by AlphaTauri in July this year. Now, the 28-year-old is finally prepared for the next chapter in his career.

Nyck de Vries set to return to Formula E with Mahindra
The Dutch driver had achieved decent success in the all-electric racing championship with Mercedes. Nyck de Vries won the 2020/2021 Formula E world title with the Silver Arrows and became the first world champion of the series. However, the 28-year-old left Formula E at the end of 2022. As Red Bull had offered de Vries a seat at AlphaTauri for 2023.
Now, the 28-year-old comes full circle. After conducting talks with multiple Formula E teams, Nissan, Maserati, and Andretti, Nyck de Vries signed with India’s Mahindra Racing for his return to the all-electric series in 2024. Edoardo Mortara will partner the former F1 driver as Mahindra opts for a brand new line-up for next season.

Certainly, Nyck de Vries would be looking to prove his worth once again in the racing world. Formula E is the best option for the Dutch driver as he triumphed in the series in the past. However, Mahindra was one of the worst performers in the championship this season. As such, it remains to be seen if de Vries made the right call to join forces with the Indian team.
