“Obrigado Pele,” Sergio Perez shares a special throwback picture as he pays condolences to the late Football legend

Sergio Perez is a Mexican Formula 1 driver. Over the years, Sergio has shown his love for sports outside of F1, particularly Football. Previously Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez held an interest to play Football professionally instead. As such, after the tragic death of Brazilian Football legend, Pele, Sergio paid his respects to one of the greatest players the world had ever seen.

Sergio Perez posted a story on Instagram. Sergio wrote the caption, “Obrigado Pele,” which translates to Thank You Pele in Portuguese (The native language of the Football star). Perez also included the Dove of peace emoji, a sign of respect and the desire for the dead to get peace. to The posted picture was an emotional throwback to when Checo got the chance to meet the Brazilian legend.

The photo depicts Perez and Pele together enjoying each other’s company. Details about this picture is hard to find, but the quality of the image signals it to be decades old. Moreover, Sergio Perez is wearing a t-shirt of Escudería Telmex. A Mexico-based racing team, for which Sergio raced in his junior career. Certainly, Perez must have felt a rush of emotions after finding this image. The F1 driver mourned the death of one of the most influential figures of his childhood.

Sergio Perez’s tribute is just one of many we can see online. Virtually every single sportsperson irrespective of their discipline has come out to pay their respects to Pele. It goes to show how Pele changed the global landscape during his time in Football. The Brazilian won three world cups for his country. On an even sadder note, Pele passed away on the same day as Michael Schumacher’s terrible skiing accident. Certainly solidifying December 29 as a tragic day for many.

Lewis Hamilton was another F1 driver at the forefront of paying a tribute to Pele. Hamilton too was an avid Football fan and saw the Brazilian as a great inspiration in his life. Pele was one of the kindest and most generous athletes and his gift of a special jersey to Lewis Hamilton was perhaps great proof of that. Pele had even graced the Formula 1 world on several occasions and F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali shared his prayers towards Pele’s family.

During this time, this late-Football star, not only became an inspiration to Brazil but to millions of viewers across the globe. Not only did Pele, bring glory to the Latin American country of Brazil but allowed people to dream. The Football legend proved to the world that achieving dreams were possible. Alas, even the greatest cannot run away from death, and thus, at the age of 82, the world lost a legend. But Pele’s legacy will be felt for decades to come, and we hope to make him proud.
