“Only by merit, not as a social message”: Charles Leclerc opines on entry of women in Formula 1

Started as an elitist sport reserved for the rich and the influential people of Europe, Formula 1 has made great strides towards becoming more and more inclusive in the recent years ever since Liberty Media took over its ownership. Now, there are racers from all corners of the world, and even American teams take part in this pinnacle of motorsports. But even then, there are some shortcomings that Formula 1 has not been able to work through yet.
One of the major things that might seem strange to any person is that there is only one Black racer in the current F1 grid–and that is Lewis Hamilton. Apart from this, there is also a dire deficiency of female representation in Formula 1. Although there is a specific racing league dedicated to women, called Formula W, which comes under the aegis of F1, still there has been not a single woman racer in the highest league of motorsports currently.
But this year saw some improvements regarding female representation in Formula 1 as four female racers–Abbi Pulling, Chloe Chambers, Hamda Al Qubaisi, and Tereza Babickova–got the chance to test drive for F3 in France. This has reignited talks about when women would make it into F1, and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc is the latest person to weigh in on this topic with his remarks.
Charles Leclerc believes Jamie Chadwick stands out with her performance in Formula W
In a recent interview, Ferrari racer Charles Leclerc was asked the question of the hour–what is his take on the entry of women in Formula 1. In reply to this, the Monegasque said, “I follow the W series a bit, Jamie Chadwick is very good. It’s good to give women a chance in F2 and F3, and hopefully F1. But if there is a female driver, it should be by merit, not with the help of a social message.”

Thus, it is quite evident that Charles Leclerc wishes there is female participation in Formula 1, but only if the women racers enter the league solely based off of their merit, and not as a part of any social agenda. In other news, Formula W Champion Jaime Chadwick also discussed her interest to reach F1 in the next 5 years. Now, it only remains to be seen when F1 takes the next step towards being more inclusive to racers from all sexes and creeds.
