‘Only Lewis Hamilton does that’: Frédéric Vasseur points out one of Charles Leclerc’s most eye catching trait

Charles Leclerc has had a season which promised a lot but, unfortunately, hasn’t reached its full potential. It was a flawless start to the season with the Monegasque driver winning two out of the first three races, allowing him to have a 46 point lead over Max Verstappen, who presented a realistic threat to his title winning aspirations. But, it has all gone downhill ever since that point in the season.

Max Verstappen bounced back to win 5 out of the next 6 races and now sits comfortably at the top of the championship. The reigning world champion enjoys a 80 point lead over the driver. The question that comes to our mind is how did that 46 points lead turn into a 80 points deficit for the Monegasque driver? It’s been a combination of terrible strategies and a few mistakes by Charles himself.

But, Charles Leclerc has been able to stand out in times of adversity as well. French GP was one of the races where Ferrari held the advantage, as the circuit has very few straights and a lot of fast corners. It seemed like Charles was going to win the race but a mistake by him costed him the race. Most drivers would have come out and blamed someone else but not Charles who accepted his mistake and said, “Who makes such mistakes, should not even think about the title. Such a driver does not deserve the title.”

Frédéric Vasseur draws parallel between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in regards to self criticism

Alfa Romeo Team Principal, Frédéric Vasseur, has been particularly impressed with Charles and compared him to Lewis Hamilton in that aspect. He said, “Apart from his unrivalled talent? I have only seen one other driver be so ruthless in criticising himself when his performance was below par and that was Lewis Hamilton.”

“Hamilton and Leclerc are the only drivers I have seen in my F1 career with self-criticism, even after a win.

All the other drivers would have patted themselves on the shoulder, but these two know they should have driven better. They approach that relentlessly.”

There have been times when Charles Leclerc has been left helpless by his team and that has costed him a handful of points. But instead of criticizing anyone else, he has kept his cool and the team together. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, he’ll be WORLD CHAMPION one day.
