Oscar Piastri had a stunning season in his rookie campaign in the highest tier of motorsport. With two podium finishes and a sprint win, Piastri’s season was the best statistical rookie season since Lewis Hamilton in 2007, also with McLaren.

Piastri was closer to his teammate Lando Norris, especially considering it was his first season. As the Australian learns and develops, concerns regarding a rivalry with Norris arise. Piastri has dismissed these, claiming there would be no barrier between him and his counterpart, especially regarding technological feedback.

The team back at MTC and the engineers here are all doing their best to try and help things. But if me and Lando have got any additional info or directions on things, then anything we can do to help is going to help both of us. If me and Lando have got any additional info or directions on things, then anything we can do to help is going to help both of us. In terms of data and stuff like that, it's all completely open. There are no barriers or anything and that won't change.

Piastri finished on the podium twice in 2023 while Norris managed the feat seven times. Qatar was Piastri’s only podium where he placed higher than his British teammate, and also managed to win the sprint race at the venue in his first time racing there.

Oscar Piastri describes attempts to keep racing fair in rookie season

Piastri described his racing behaviour in his rookie season, and attempts to keep racing civil. The 22-year-old claimed he had not raced too harshly or aggressively in his first season, and stressed the importance of team results rather than being correct in a situation.

I don't think I'm overly harsh or aggressive or anything like that. In my junior career, a big element of my championships was from staying out of trouble and being consistent. I think it’s more important to finish the race and be wrong in a situation than be right about something and be out of the race.
Oscar Piastri said, as reported by mirror.co.uk

Piastri signed a contract extension with McLaren alongside Norris, agreeing to drive for the team until the end of 2025. The sprint race winner has had some trouble regarding contracts before, abruptly leaving the Alpine Academy for McLaren in 2022.
