Oscar Piastri impressed the entire paddock in his debut season in Formula 1. The Australian driver delivered beyond expectations and was upto speed against teammate Lando Norris at McLaren. However, Piastri has now opened up about the lessons he learned from his rookie season at the pinnacle of motorsport.
The 22-year-old admitted that there have been multiple lessons during his first season in F1. Oscar Piastri claimed that the biggest one was the lack of any room for error. The Australian driver reckoned that a single mistake could cost a driver massively. As the pecking order had been quite close throughout 2023.
There's been a lot of lessons. I think, for me, you can't rest, making a mistake in Formula 1 costs you a lot more than it might do otherwise.Oscar Piastri said as reported by RacingNews365
Piastri affirmed that even a small mistake could end up costing many positions for a driver on the track. This was evident as McLaren overturned its fortunes mid-way through 2023 and challenged the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes. Certainly, things are expected to get even busier next season as teams continue to develop over the winter.
If you take it a little bit easy you can suddenly lose a lot of time, a lot of positions. So that's probably the biggest one.
Oscar Piastri to go head-to-head against Lando Norris in 2024
Oscar Piastri managed to come close to teammate Lando Norris in 2023. Although the points deficit between the two McLaren drivers was significant, Piastri had exceeded expectations. Moreover, the Australian driver took the team’s only F1 Sprint win at the Qatar GP after an incredible drive against Max Verstappen.
Certainly, Oscar Piastri would be looking to improve on his performance in the coming season. The 22-year-old has bagged a long-term contract with McLaren for his impressive rookie season. However, Piastri will face stiff competition from his teammate as the Woking-based team strives to get to the front of the grid.
