“Our time on track wasn’t ideal,” Sergio Perez reflects on his troubles during the first two practice sessions at Spa

It was not a great Friday for Red Bull’s Sergio Perez as he struggled throughout both the practice sessions yesterday. In the last few races, it has been observed that the Mexican driver has been struggling to fully adapt to the car with new upgrades put in place. After almost a month long of vacations, all the drivers are hungrier than ever to get back on the track and get the racing action going.

Sergio Perez after 13 rounds is third in the Drivers Championship. He sits behind teammate Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. The Mexican also announced a few weeks back that he has a contract with Red Bull Racing till 2024 which has to be a great relief for him. Perez also indicated that the contract extension he signed with the team earlier in the season was the right decision for him and his aspirations in the sport. Coming into Spa, the Mexican driver has a big responsibility under his hands. Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc will be taking grid penalties this weekend which will send them to the back of the grid. It is necessary for Sergio to capitalise on that.

With the top 2 in the championship starting from the back, it is necessary for Sergio Perez to qualify in the highest position possible. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and the two Mercedes drivers will be more than ready to capitalise on the grid penalties that the title contenders have. It will be crucial for Perez to sort out his problems before qualifying today and support the team. The Mexican driver finished P10 in both FP1 and FP2. With FP3 being underway in a few hours, the driver will have to analyse and bring in the required setup changes to get a better understanding of the car. Perez further went on to comment on the whole situation.

“We didn’t have the rhythm out there today and part of that was down to the conditions. But we also had a little issue with the rear wing, so we stopped for some time but that was resolved,” he said.

“Our time on track wasn’t ideal today due to the weather, especially on the final lap of FP2 on the soft tyre when things were a bit on the damper side. As soon as you get a damp corner you fully lose the balance on the track and it is very hard to learn anything,” he continued.

With new floors being brought to Spa, it will be interesting to see if Sergio Perez has made any progress after FP3 . Qualifying in a good place will be crucial for the race. This is the Mexican driver’s best chance at winning the race with his teammate starting at the back.
