Mattia Binotto is renowned for being Ferrari’s team boss between 2019 and 2022. In his four years at the Scuderia garage, he was heavily criticized for never-ending problems, ranging from poor machinery to botched strategy. Frederic Vasseur replaced him following a 2022 campaign where the team plummeted from a winning position.

However, there is more to Binotto than just being a team boss. The Italian, widely regarded as one of the most talented engineers in Formula 1, made significant contributions to Michael Schumacher and Ferrari’s dominant era from 1999 to 2004. However, his tenure as team principal was completely fraught with challenges.

Binotto faced conflicts with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc, and Leclerc’s difficult 2022 season played a significant role in Binotto’s dismissal. On the contrary, Binotto enjoyed a strong bond with Carlos Sainz, who cited their relationship as a primary factor in his decision to join Ferrari. He is widely renowned for his technical expertise.

The latest development is that he has been spotted at the Silverstone paddock for the upcoming British GP. Recently, he was considered for the post of team boss of the forthcoming debutant Audi. However, after a factory tour and what was essentially a sales pitch of their project, Mattia Binotto was quick to dismiss the opportunity, labeling them ‘clowns’.

Since he was fired, several pundits have spoken out and stated that despite being sacked from the team boss role, Ferrari should employ him in a different capacity rather than lose him. More specifically, a technical role in development while Vasseur spearheads the team as boss could be beneficial. Amid all the rumors of his return to a role in F1, he has been spotted in discussion with Frederic Vasseur.

Fans took to Twitter to react to the Italian returning to the company of Ferrari, which could hold a potential job prospect. One user wrote, “every murderer return to crime scene eventually.” Another said, “He should be ashamed to come here”. It’s fair to say fans aren’t too thrilled to witness his return. The majority of hate directed towards Binotto is specifically because at the same track last year, he put Charles Leclerc on a horrible strategy that robbed him of a race win, seemingly gifting it to Carlos Sainz, who took his first career GP victory. It undoubtedly left a sour taste in the mouths of most Ferrari and Leclerc fans.
