Pierre Gasly has stated that the qualifying session in Barcelona is going to be essential, because that is the best way they can expect good results in the race, as it is easier to start at the front rather than overtaking a lot of cars.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is an amazing circuit, but the only thing it lacks is the fewer opportunities to overtake. Even though the new generation cars are made to race closer than ever before with the return of the ground effect, it is still not physically possible for drivers to race close in some of the circuits.

Pierre Gasly thinks that it is best for AlphaTauri to qualify ahead rather than expecting a lot of overtakes in a single race.

AlphaTauri recently upgraded their cars right before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, but due to the weather in Imola, and Gasly’s early retirement in Miami, it has been difficult to measure the improvement in the performance of the car, as Gasly stated earlier.

The Frenchman has stated that even though the cars are meant to be battling closer, it is going to be difficult on this circuit, and they cannot overtake 10 cars all of a sudden; development is gradual.

“It’s important for us to qualify well and come out at the front of the field,” says Pierre Gasly.

“Last race we got both cars in Q3, so it was our best qualifying of the season. It was going well until I made contact with Fernando [Alonso]. It ruined my race. That was disappointing because we drove a solid weekend. We definitely deserved the points,” said Gasly, quotes GPBlog.

“We know that overtaking is very difficult at this circuit and that will remain the same, even with these new cars. It’s important for us to qualify well and come out at the front of the field. In fact, I would be surprised if we can overtake ten times more often than before.”

The Spanish Grand Prix is set to be held on 20 – 22 May. Pierre Gasly, as of now, stands 13th with 6 points, and AlphaTauri on 7th with 16 points, followed by Haas and Williams.
