Pierre Gasly and Alpine might have a bit of an issue to worry about this year. Despite having a strong upper midfield car, one thing that has always been Alpine’s Achilles heel is their reliability. Here, more emphasis is being given towards the power unit in the car. A poser unit is the most crucial part in a Formula 1 car. Hence, it is important to make sure that it’s fast and reliable.
According to F1 rules and regulations, each driver is only allowed to have four power units throughout the season. If the team decides to put in a fifth engine, it is without a doubt that the driver will have to incur a massive penalty. Pierre Gasly already reached his maximum limit of four during last weekend’s Canadian GP. This was even before the halfway point of the season.
Pierre Gasly has become the only driver on the grid to have used all four engines. The introduction of a new one will result in a penalty. However, one can replace the engine with an old engine from the four in order to avoid a penalty. Meanwhile Esteban Ocon doesn’t seem to have any issues at his side of the garage. As a result of his actions, Pierre had a whole season ahead of him to survive with 15 races still left.

In an interview, here is what the team’s sporting director Alan Permane had to say. “I’m told we won’t take any more. I know it’s very early in the season, but that’s where he is,” he said. “He’s got enough to get him through to the rest of the year. There’s far cleverer people than me looking at that and allocation of mileages and power degradations, and all those sort of things. But at the moment, plans are to go through the rest of the year without a penalty,” he said.
While Ex-Teammate Max Verstappen went on to dominate in Canada, Pierre Gasly went on to finish out of the points in 12th place. Meanwhile, his teammat Esteban Ocon went on to finish in the top 10. Ocon now has double the points that Pierre has. It will be interesting to see who will win the teammate battle at the end of the season. Currently, it looks like Esteban Ocon has got it in the bag. However, one can never count out Gasly.
