Formula One tire supplier Pirelli has confirmed that no new tire compounds will be brought to the sport for the 2024 season. The Italian tire manufacturer has supplied F1 with tires for 18 whole seasons now, their most recent stint starting in 2011.

There are currently five compounds of slick tires, available depending on the assigned weekend. Pirelli confirmed that 2024 would not see any new options for the teams except for the C0 tire. The C0 tire was tested earlier this season, before the 2023 season’s inaugural race in Bahrain.

Pirelli currently had a contract to supply tires for F1 till 2024. After stiff competition from Bridgestone for the years beyond, Pirelli managed to squash the competition and get their time extended from 2025 to the 2027 season, with the option of a fourth season in 2028.

George Russell claims safety car ahead of cold Pirelli tires was dangerous

The Las Vegas Grand Prix did not see racing action extend into the first stint of the session. The intervention was caused by Lando Norris, who found the barriers after losing control due to lack of grip. The safety car was brought out, slowing the grid down as they lined up behind.

The lack of grip along with the plummeting temperatures brought a new issue for the drivers. A slippery track with cold temperatures meant an even lower grip for the drivers, who found it challenging just to stay on track. George Russell said the rock-solid tires were even colder than in the rain, and the risk of losing control is very high in such conditions.

It was really dangerous under the Safety Car, The tyres were rock-solid and they were colder than you’d experience in the rain, really.
George Russell said, as reported by f1i.com

Russell had a less-than-ideal race anyway, as the Briton made contact with Max Verstappen to bring out another safety car. The Mercedes driver found himself with a 5-second penalty for the incident, which dropped him to 8th behind his teammate in the results.
