Pressurised by F1 fans, Haas team principal considers putting Nico Hulkenberg alongside Kevin ‘suck my balls’ Magnussen for the 2023 season
Haas F1 team boss Guenther Steiner and Nico Hulkenberg
Haas F1 boss Guenther Steiner has been tasked with the tough decision of choosing Kevin Magnussen’s teammate for 2023. Nico Hulkenberg has started to look like the prime candidate for the team, having earned the title of ‘Super Sub’ after substituting for various drivers for one-off races and putting in impressive performances. Although this won’t be the only reason that the team is considering him for the job.
Even after multiple years, fans still get a good laugh reminiscing about an incident that happened between Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen back in the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. Kevin pushed Nico off the track during the race for which he received a penalty. After the race ended, Magnussen was in the TV pen doing his usual interviews when Nico dropped in and confronted him about the incident to which the Haas driver replied “suck my balls”.
The video of that incident went viral and F1 fans still associate the two with this particular term. The drivers themselves have made peace with it and are on good terms. The thought of the two drivers being paired together for next season is one that has seemingly thrown the fans into a frenzy. Guenther Steiner also said that he is looking for experienced drivers on a priority basis which could solidify Nico Hulkenberg’s chances of joining the team. Here is what the Haas team principal had to say.

“The fans would love it,” Guenther Steiner on possibly signing Nico Hulkenberg for 2023
When asked about who he wants on his team, Steiner clarified that “most drivers with a superlicence” are on the list. “What can a driver contribute to making the team better and bringing us to the top?” he said while mentioning his criteria.
“How much risk are you willing to take? You usually take more risks with a young driver because you don’t know how far he can go.” He admits that it’s a gut feeling than when it comes to deciding Magnussen’s team-mate, he clarified that “you can’t calculate that mathematically”. Steiner is of the opinion that, “the fans would love it.”
In the end, it all depends on Mick Schumacher and his performance in the remaining races. Having scored points only twice in his whole F1 career, the team wants to look at other prospects and will be rooting for experienced drivers more. That’s where Nico Hulkenberg comes in. A decision will be made in the coming few rounds. The silly season isn’t over as of now. There is much more to come.
