Ralf Schumacher, the former Williams-BMW driver, has spoken about the German Team’s misfortunes at the Qatar GP. Schumacher has claimed that Toto Wolff would have to take charge and destroy what seems to be the building blocks of yet another ‘Silver War’ just like the once seen during the Lewis Hamilton-Nico Rosberg era.
Toto Wolff was actually absent from the Qatar Grand Prix as he was at home recuperating from an orthopedic surgery. So, when the Mercedes men collided into each other at the first turn of the race, he could only see it on his screen at home. The Mercedes Team Principal had already announced earlier that he would not be able to act in the role of the team leader for the Silver Arrows during the weekend in Qatar. He was replaced by two of Mercedes’ senior officers, Bradley Lord and Jerome D’Ambrosio.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Schumacher insisted that there must be a team intervention to stop the the rising tension between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Schumacher said, “Now, there is some work to do between the two. You can deal with each other however you want, but the team will have to intervene from now on, and it will.” Schumacher’s remark echoes many other voices being heard following the Qatar GP as several pundits and fans have pointed towards the confusing team dynamics at Mercedes.

Toto Wolff insists that Mercedes have to ‘go back to the basic’ following the Qatar debacle
Despite being one of the top three teams in F1 this year, Mercedes are nowhere near the form they had shown for right seasons when they won consecutive record-setting Championship titles. To go back to their winning ways, Merc boss Toto Wolff already knows what lies ahead for the Silver Arrows. The Austrian is also known to take the tips for improvement from Lewis Hamilton who has been with the team since forever. Wolff addressed Hamilton’s complaints about the cockpit positioning and talked about reworking the small details at the Garage.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Wolff said: “We have to get back to basics. I don’t want to hear Lewis say anymore ‘My cockpit is too far forward’. The biggest problem is that the drivers have no confidence in the car.” Wolff added how far the gap to Red Bull and Verstappen actually is while appreciating Merc’s P2 position in the constructor’s title. He said “Ferrari, Aston Martin, McLaren, and us are all in the same situation. At least we are second in the constructors’ championship, because after all these years we have learned how to optimize our results. It’s just that no one comes close to Verstappen.”
Mercedes are currently fighting for the runners-up spot in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. It will be interesting to see if the two teammates resort to battling it out amongst themselves rather than battling it out with the rest of the grid.
