Lewis Hamilton started from pole position at the Hungarian GP. The 7-time world champion failed to make the most out of the starting position in the race as he lost the lead to Max Verstappen in Turn 1. The British driver fell to fourth place by the end of the first lap. Now, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher pointed out the moment that showcased the greatness of the Mercedes driver.

Schumacher mentioned Hamilton’s incredible performance in Qualifying at the Hungaroring as the 38-year-old achieved his first pole position since 2021. The F1 pundit reckoned that this was a testament to the Briton’s ability to get the most out of the car. He wrote in his Sky Germany column, “Hamilton had a great qualifying session, loves the track, got to the point, and has proven that he can get more potential out of the car for a lap.”

The former F1 driver believed that how Lewis Hamilton apologized to his team after making a mistake at the start of the race proved his greatness. The 7-time world champion accepted his fault after a botched start on the team radio. Ralf Schumacher explained, “In the race, however, he missed the start and lost his podium early. Immediately after the mistake, he apologized to the team – that shows greatness!”

Hamilton surprised the paddock as he put the Mercedes in pole position in Hungary by only 0.003 seconds to Max Verstappen. This presented the perfect opportunity for the British driver to claim his first race victory since the 2021 Brazilian GP. Unfortunately, things did not work out for the 7-time world champion, who failed to bag a podium finish.

Although, the Hungarian GP showed some positive signs for Mercedes, including its first pole position of the season. George Russell put in an impressive recovery drive in the race after being knocked out in Q1 on Saturday. The 25-year-old even clocked in some of the fastest laps throughout the race. As such, Mercedes could be a threat in the upcoming races.

Thus, Ralf Schumacher insists that Lewis Hamilton is a driver who doesn’t hesitate to apologize to his team in case of an error. The 7-time world champion is not only an all-time great through his staggering sports records. Hamilton’s humility and nature after accepting his mistake show his true greatness on and off track.
