Red Bull further attempts to solidify Championship lead by recruiting ex-Mercedes engine personnel
Red Bull vs Mercedes
Going into the Formula 1 2022 season’s summer break of one month, Red Bull Racing have established their supremacy by jumping to the top of the scoreboard and building a huge gap of almost 100 points between themselves and their closest rival–Scuderia Ferrari. But to be the best, they have to borrow help from the best. Using this principle, Red Bull have recruited a new Technical Director to oversee the developments at the Red Bull Powertrains factory, Ben Hodgkinson. And ifthe reports are to be believed, Hodgkinson is a former Mercedes employee, having spent two decades as Head of Mechanical Engineering at Mercedes’ Brixworth factory.
The Red Bull Powertrains factory is only 30 miles away from the Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains factory, and even in the past, there have been many instances where Red Bull have poached key personnel from the Mercedes team to work for them, and Ben Hodgkinson seems to be the newest addition to the Red Bull crew. The huge number of people leaving Mercedes to join Red Bull has resulted from the news that the Stuttgart-based team would lose Honda as their engine supplier at the end of 2021.

Following the example of Ben Hodgkinson and many others who left Mercedes for Red Bull, a significant member of the Silver Arrows staff has now joined the Milton-Keynnes-based team–Phil Prew. Prew was, until recently, Chief Engineer of Mercedes’ Engine Division, and he left the role to join Red Bull Powertrains in a “senior” position, as has been claimed in several news reports.
Phil Prew has a slew of work experiences to claim, as the expert engineer has previously been associated with McLaren, where he worked with Lewis Hamilton as his race engineer for his Championship-winning campaign in 2008. Besides the seven-time World Champion, Prew has also worked with David Coulthard and Juan Pablo Montoya.
Having scored such a respected and experienced staff member, Red Bull Eam Principal Christian Horner said, “I think Powertrains is going from strength to strength. We’ve taken on further appointments and recruits, which will be announced shortly, and that’s exciting for the project. I think things are really taking shape. You can see in Milton Keynes we’ve gone from being an industrial estate, or a few units on an industrial estate, to being a technology campus. And investment by the group has been significant.”
Horner also said, “Red Bull has seen tremendous growth in the sport in everything we are doing and I think that commitment and that investment has been second to none.”
