“I would like to rule it out. But I can’t”- Sebastian Vettel refuses to dismiss the possibility of an F1 comeback

Sebastian Vettel has not rejected the chance of him coming back to F1

Sebastian Vettel retires at the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season. Over his 16-year-long career, he has shattered multiple records and provided us with one of the most dominant eras in the sport’s history with 4 back-to-back world titles. However, after two uncompetitive years at Aston Martin, the German seeks new challenges outside F1, whilst also being able to spend more time with his family.

Sebastian’s career stats are envied by almost all drivers on the grid, with 4 championships, 53 Grand Prix wins and 57 pole positions. Recently the 35-year-old also led his 3500th lap in Formula 1. The German showcased brilliance during his time with Red Bull but eventually moved to Scuderia Ferrari in 2015 to replicate the success of his idol, Michael Schumacher with the Prancing Horse. Unfortunately, this was not his fate, as Vettel failed to win the title after coming close in 2017 and 2018.

Sebastian Vettel departs from Formula 1 at the end of 2022

In 2021, the four-time world champion moved to Aston Martin where a new journey awaited him. But the team lacked competitiveness because of the rule changes forcing Seb to battle at the back of the grid. Vettel achieved one podium finish at Baku in 2021. 2022 rule changes brought a ray of hope for the team but ultimately did not help its prospects with the team still not improving. Thus on 28th July 2022, Sebastian Vettel announced his departure from Aston Martin and the sport at the end of the season.

“I hope that I will say in two years: ‘No thanks, I no longer need racing'” – Sebastian Vettel hints at his interest to stay outside F1

Vettel will always be remembered as one of the all-time greats

Despite Sebastian Vettel‘s decision, his love for the sport hasn’t declined as we have seen the German race with passion and deliver solid results in the last couple of races. This has made fans wonder if Vettel will make a comeback to the sport. Many even believe the arrival of Audi into F1 is a potential opportunity. But as it seems, the German wants to get away from the formula as he embarks on a new chapter in his life.

In an interview with Der Spiegal, when asked if he’d want to be back in F1, Seb said, “I’d like to rule it out. But I can’t. I have no idea how I’ll be ticking in a year or two.” The 35-year-old expressed his desire to no longer require racing in his life, saying, “As far as the physical is concerned, I do a sport that you could still return to after a two-year break. However, I hope that I will say in two years: ‘No thanks, I no longer need racing’.” Vettel insisted that he wishes to not be dependent on a sport he has raced for 16 years in.

When asked about his return to the paddock as a presenter, Seb declined instantly and clarified, “I’m not sure if I want to see the race at all. Formula 1 was my life’s content for 16 years. Now I secretly have the expectation of myself to be able to cope without Formula 1 – as if I were depriving me.” Thus ruling out the chances of the German returning to a managerial role a least in the near future. But it still keeps the door open for the German as a driver if he indeed wants to be back in the F1 circus.

We all admire Sebastian, his personality, his work outside the sport, his activism, and most importantly his memorable drives in F1. If it was up to us, we’d keep him racing forever. But times change, he is 35 now, and he has a family who he wishes to spend more time with. He wants to use his image as a way to raise awareness for climate change, he wants to dedicate his time to causes outside of motorsports. From his words, one can tell that he doesn’t know if he’d be able to survive without racing in his life but that’s exactly what he wants to test. To make himself independent of racing in his life.
