The news of Lewis Hamilton leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari from the 2025 season onwards, had already fueled the silly season madness that began even before the season had started. Now Sebastian Vettel has teased his return back to the F1 grid via his latest post on Instagram.

With the departure of the Briton from the Silver Arrows, a question arises as to who will replace the seven-time champion in the second seat at Mercedes. Many conspiracy theories have already originated and many reputable figures in the paddock also believe this. Ex-owner of an F1 team Eddie Jordan had attached the 4-time champion to a potential move to Mercedes and how it makes sense for the team.

The German has been away from the sport for only a single year but the magic of F1 can attract him back to racing, especially with a team with which his idol Michael Schumacher had made his comeback in F1. Vettel has fueled such speculations by posting a video of him saying that he is “getting back into the rhythm“. It would be a driver move almost as big as Hamilton’s move to Ferrari.

What are the available options for Mercedes?

Mercedes are now in a tough situation to replace an outgoing Hamilton who is the best to have been on the grid statistically. The Silver Arrows have a lot of options on their hands, but it would be difficult to fill the void left by the Briton.

The Brackley-based squad has the option of currently free agent drivers like Carlos Sainz who will become a free agent from the 2025 season onwards and is a high-caliber driver. The option of Vettel could be tempting for the team as he brings a lot of commercial value to the team and in his prime no one could have ever beaten him.

It would be a tough decision for the team to decide only a single driver who could replace Hamilton. They have a lot of viable options but choosing the correct one would be difficult for Toto Wolff and his team. The time will only tell who will fill up the second seat at Mercedes and pair up with George Russell.
