Sebastian Vettel trades racing on land for an adventure in the sea, joins German SailGP team for first career move since F1 exit
Sebastian Vettel has finally made a career move since F1 exit and it is not related to racing on the land at all.
Last year, the biggest shocker regarding the drivers’ market came from four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel. The German announced his retirement from the pinnacle of motorsports after making the headlines in F1 town for opening an Instagram account. While all his fans were overjoyed to see that Vettel had finally debuted on the social media site, his first post got them crestfallen as it was on his retirement. In his statement, the former Red Bull racer admitted that he wanted to step away from F1 to focus on his family life as he was nearing 35 years of age.
Thus, at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, F1 bid adieu to one of the most talented racers in recent history in a grandiose manner. But no further confirmed news could be found concerning Sebastian Vettel’s future moves. While it was reported that the man from Heppenheim was courting several offers from IndyCar and Formula E, he never confirmed whether he was considering the other racing leagues as serious options. But now, official records have suggested that Seb is going to return to racing after months since his retirement.
While the fans had their eyes peeled for Sebastian Vettel’s return to the roads in his racecars, it seems like the German wants to trade the steering wheel for some boat paddles. He has now joined the German national sailing team as a co-investor for SailGP, which is popularly known as F1 of the seas. For this venture, Vettel has joined hands with Olympic bronze medal-winner Erik Heil, Brazilian Olympian Kahena Kunze as well as Thomas Reidl, who is the owner of their team.
Sebastian Vettel has commented on his first career move since F1 exit
Speaking on the newest development in his career trajectory, Sebastian Vettel said, “I see a lot of potential as SailGP starts its fourth season and for the first time with a German team. Parallels between sailors and Formula 1 have long existed. The boats are fascinating and the speeds on the water are incredibly high. The races are exciting and I am happy to be close to them with a motivated group of young sailors.”
While most people would have expected a four-time World Champion to keep racing in some leagues even after walking away from F1, Sebastian Vettel has managed to astonish them all. The German has decided to turn to racing in the waters by ditching the land. The fourth season of SailGP will start in Chicago on June 16, and the league uses wind-powered F50 catamaran boats that are sustainable and align perfectly with Seb’s activism against global warming. Now, it remains to be seen how the fans take in this news and wish their favorite racer good luck for his new step towards the future.
