The clock is ticking for Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll at the pinnacle of motor racing.

“A snowball effect,” Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll’s poor streak in F1 won’t end anytime soon, claims former Formula E star

Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll, despite being on the top-performing teams of 2023, are under incredible pressure to keep their F1 seats on their respective teams. Former Formula E driver and IndyCar champion Oliver Askew ardently feel that the duo could lose their seats at Red Bull and Aston Martin if they don’t improve in the upcoming races.

At Red Bull, Sergio Perez has an almost impossible task of keeping pace with the hottest property in the sport, that is, Max Verstappen. The Dutchman has been churning in mighty performances this year and has proved too hot to handle for the rest of the grid. While no one is expecting Perez to be at par with Verstappen at every race, the Austrian outfit wants him to maintain a certain level of performance at least.

Askew feels the duo has to improve their performances and while talking about Sergio Perez, with Mirror, said, “In motorsport, there’s a snowball effect, and when your momentum is going backward – for Sergio Perez that is the case – it’s hard to stop that train. It doesn’t help that his team-mate Max Verstappen is continuing to grow the lead to hand him the championship. It was just a couple of weeks ago where [Perez] felt like he was able to take the fight to Max, and now he’s within fighting distance of Fernando Alonso, so it’s very difficult.”

Lance Stroll needs to match Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin

Lance Stroll is the son of Aston Martin F1 co-owner Lawrence Stroll and probably has a bit more breathing space than Sergio Perez. The Canadian’s performances behind the wheel of the AMR 23 have been average at best in the 2023 F1 season.

While Askew has urged Red Bull’s Mexican driver to start improving his F1 performances significantly, he feels Lance Stroll has to do the same pretty much and try and match his former 2-time World Champion teammate. Fernando Alonso has so far managed 117 points in the 2023 season, whereas Stroll is stuck on only 37 points.

The former Formula E driver added, “I can’t help but think how much further ahead in the constructors’ [Aston Martin] would be over Mercedes with the help of Lance Stroll. Yes, he did score points [in Canada, but] it was only a couple. He will be looking to learn how Fernando is getting success, hopefully, and be able to match him more or just get thereabouts as that’s all he needs to do to help that team,”.

The ongoing campaign is nine rounds down and still has 14 Grand Prix events remaining on the calendar. Considering this fact, both Perez and Stroll have got plenty of races to make a mark, but it is going to be crucial for them to start putting in good performances from the upcoming Austrian GP regularly.
