“That’s just utter nonsense,” Martin Brundle ridicules rumours of Lewis Hamilton’s retirement

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes’ start to the 2022 season has been far from mediocre, despite the fact that they stand third in the constructors’ championship, due to the standards they’ve established on their name in the past eight years by winning each of the constructors’ championship. While most of the blame has fallen onto the shoulders of the development of the car, fingers have been pointed at Lewis Hamilton as well.

With George Russell overall outperforming him, the veteran is now under scrutiny for his inability to adapt well with the W13, and there are now several voices on the track singing that Lewis Hamilton should’ve retired after 2021 or would be considering retirement soon, some even suggesting a mid-season retirement. One of the most notable voice was that of Red Bull’s chief advisor Helmut Marko.

Ridiculing these rumours in the air, Martin Brundle, the former racer and a notable commentator at Sky Sports, has backed Hamilton. The Briton said“All of a sudden, he’s fed up, he’s had enough, he should retire,” Brundle told Sky Sports News on Thursday. “That’s just utter nonsense. His car’s not working… let’s hope Mercedes can get the car working sooner or later.”

Lewis Hamilton got an early podium in the season opener in Bahrain. However, since then, the stars haven’t looked bright for the driver, who currently stands P7 in the championship and was lapped by his 2021 rival Max Verstappen in the Imola GP.

Mentioning the epic comeback of Lewis from P20 to P1 in the 2021 Sao Paulo GP in Brazil to support the fellow Briton, Brundle said, “We can’t go from the revelation of Brazil to: He’s a busted flush, he should stop. That’s just silly talk. I loved his line – ‘it’s my masterpiece and I’ll decide when it’s finished’ – I thought it was genius. I think that summed it up perfectly. He can call the shots.”

With plenty of options for Mercedes to explore, as spoken by Toto Wolff, the team needs to find pace and stability quickly. And with at least 17 races left on this year’s calendar, it’s not too late for them to work on a strong comeback.
