“That’s the sort of thing that you need to weed out”: Damon Hill reacted to Charles Leclerc’s mistakes in Imola GP

In the 2022 F1 World Championship, Ferrari has come up as the team to watch out for now that the turbo-hybrid era of Formula 1 has come to an end. And Charles Leclerc, the Monegasque doctor, recruited by Scuderia Ferrari, has beaten eight-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton as well as reigning Champion Max Verstappen to get to the top of the WDC Standings with 86 points to his name.

Charles Leclerc got his first P1 finish of the season in Bahrain at the opening race of F1 2022. Then, he got his second race win in Melbourne, Australia while his teammate Carlos Sainz succumbed to engine issues and had to retire from the race early on. But in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the current Championship leader made some big mistakes that helped his rival Max Verstappen gain a position on him, and he had to settle for a P6 finish in the main race.

Charles Leclerc got P2 in the Qualifying at Imola, and in the Sprint Race, he overtook Max Verstappen in the first lap itself. While the Dutchman kept chasing behind Leclerc for the first half of the race, Charles’ tyres started giving away towards the end of the race. This gave Verstappen an opportunity to overtake the Scuderia racer, and he succeeded.

Charles ended his Sprint run at P2. And in the main race, he lost his position again, and ended up in the P6 place. The Monegasque openly accepted that he had made some mistakes in his startegy for the Imola GP and he could not achieve the desired results at Ferrari’s home Grand Prix.

When asked about his opinions on Charles’ race in Imola, Damon Hill said to the host of F1 Nation podcast, “We’ve seen with Charles of course, Imola was an opportunity to consolidate. And he went for a move which was just a little bit too ambitious, and he called it greedy.

Hill continued, “Leclerc just thought, ‘I’ll launch it over the kerb,’ and it was just far too ambitious. And you think, why do that when you’ve got so much responsibility? That’s the sort of thing that you need to weed out of your portfolio as a top driver. You can’t be doing rash moves like that.”
