‘FIA is on Red Bull’s payroll’: F1 Twitter sarcastically reacts to Max Verstappen’s nasty collision with arch rival Lewis Hamilton at Monza

Max Verstappen collision with Lewis Hamilton in Monza 2021

With the Italian Grand Prix just around the corner, a lot of people will be talking about the incident which happened between title contenders Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen last year. With the title fight between them going in full power, it was a tense time for both the drivers and mistakes couldn’t be made. After a spectacular sprint race, all eyes were on race day as sprint winner Valtteri Bottas had been sent to the back of the grid due to a power unit change.

The race had a “Max Verstappen Win” written all over it although that wasn’t the case. On Lap 26 of the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit, the the two drivers came together at turn two in the Rettifilo chicane.

Lewis Hamilton was behind Max but a very slow pitstop that lasted more than 10 seconds meant that when he came out of the pits, he was side by side to Lewis as he slightly went ahead. The two drivers went into turn 1 with the Mercedes driver on the inside and Verstappen on the outside.

After turn 1, the Dutch driver tried to go down Lewis’s inside for turn 2 but that did not go to plan. Verstappen was launched into the air because of the sausage kerb and collided with Hamilton where he ended up on the top of his car. This meant that both the drivers were effectively out of the race.

Right after the collision, Verstappen’s radio roared with him saying “That’s what you get for not leaving space,” as he left his car and walked away while Lewis was still trying to reverse his car which was stuck in gravel. The British driver’s camera was damaged from the collision and no reaction had been broadcasted leaving the fans to argue about who was at fault. After the crash, Lewis Hamilton went on to give his thoughts on what had happened.

“I came out, I saw Daniel came past, Max was coming, I made sure I left a car’s width on the outside for him,” said Hamilton. “I went into turn one and I was ahead, I was ahead going into turn two and then all of a sudden he was on top of me,” he said.

Max Verstappen went on to give his take on the whole situation. “He just kept on pushing me wider and wider. At one point there was no way to go, he just pushed me onto the sausage kerb and that’s why, at the end of the day, we touched because of the rear tyre bumped up to his tyre,” said the Red Bull driver.

In the end, both lost out on valuable points for their championship charge which was all because they were adamant on not pulling out. After the crash in Silverstone, there was obviously a lot of tension going around between them which is why them coming together was no surprise. With F1 going racing in Monza this week, will we get to see something similar?
