With the United States Grand Prix coming up in a few days’ time, the American fans are excited to welcome the F1 paddocks to their country. While Formula One was primarily viewed as a sport reserved for the European elite ever since its commencement, with time, American racers started appearing in the highest league of motorsports and till date, there have been 57 F1 drivers from the States and only two World Champions–Mario Andretti and Phil Hill.
The legacy of the Andretti family in the field of motorsports is known to all the motorsports enthusiasts. Mario Andretti won his World Championship title in F1 in 1978, and then he went on to become one of the only two persons in the world to have won races in F1, IndyCar, NASCAR, as well as the World Sportscar Championship. And, now, to pay tribute to the great racer, the Circuit of the Americas in Texas has decided to name a corner after him.

The news about the naming of corner 20 of COTA after Mario Andretti came as a surprise to the fans, right after the 82-year-old former World Champion took the wheels of a restored McLaren MP4-28, at Zac Brown’s request. The ceremony surrounding the naming of corner 20 as “The Andretti” will take place on the Thursday preceding the United States GP weekend.
In other news, Andretti’s team is looking to make an entry into Formula One and not everyone is happy about that. Even F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali gave the opinion that the Championship does not require an additional team now as there are already 20 participants competing for the Constructors’ title. But according to Andretti, they are preparing for an F1 grid appearance in the 2024 season.
