“The clock is ticking,” Marc Surer takes a grim view of Fernando Alonso’s move to Aston Martin

Former F1 driver, Marc Surer believes that Fernando Alonso has not taken the best decision about rejecting an offer from Alpine and moving to Aston Martin for the 2023 season. Alonso returned to F1 in 2021 with Alpine and had a considerably amazing performance throughout the season. While the team struggled a bit to cope with the new regulations, they managed to leave McLaren behind to hold up the 4th position in the constructor’s standings with Ocon and Fernando, as of now. The Spaniard had a 2-year deal signed with Alpine, and now he has rejected to increase the contract further.

Watch: Should Fernando Alonso Have Stayed at Alpine?

All of this happened when Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement post this season, and Alpine agreed to giving only a year’s contract extension to Alonso, which made him choose Aston Martin over them. Marc Surer believes that he shouldn’t have done this, as the data speaks for itself. Alpine have performed way better than both the Aston Martins, as if the Spaniard had any chance at winning more races, it was possible only with Alpine, as the other team has failed to perform, and his performance will start going downhill, added Surer.

Surer thinks that it might be time for Fernando Alonso

Marc Surer believes that a driver loses a few hundredths of a second a year, and after being for such a long time in the sport, soon will come the time when Alonso would have to bid farewell, and that is why it would have been the best for him to stay in the team instead of moving.

Surer believes the development difference and contract difference in both the teams have made Alonso make the move. “At Aston Martin, there is at least hope with the new people, who are actually all too late for this year, going up next year,” PlanetF1 quoted him.

Alonso earlier said that he would like to be in the sport to win more and perhaps win a third championship, and Surer thinks that this move to Aston Martin wouldn’t let him do that.
