“The connections are blown up the media,” Toto Wolff clarifies there’s no pecking order at Mercedes

“The connections are blown up the media,” Toto Wolff clarifies there’s no pecking order at Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell

The start of the season was a tough one for both the Mercedes drivers and the team; Lewis Hamilton and his new teammate George Russell were struggling to make it to the podium in Bahrain and it came as a surprise for the fans as Mercedes had dominated the sport for a very long time.

However, slowly and steadily Mercedes have developed, and had a very improvised finish in the Spanish Grand Prix, with Russell scoring his second podium of the year.

George Russell moved from Williams to Mercedes this year, and shockingly enough, he has been performing way better than Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes W13.

Fans have had mixed reactions to this, some believed that Hamilton’s time in the sport was over, while others are still believing that he needs time to get used to the car. One of the most famous theories that has come up is about the quality of the car; Hamilton drove a dominating Mercedes for a very long time and hence, he is used to that kind of car. On the other hand, Russell came in from Williams, and already was used to driving a “not such a good” car. So, he took his place in Mercedes which made him gain a 28 point lead over his teammate, Hamilton.

People are starting to jump to conclusions and various questions are being asked at Mercedes that if Russell has surpassed Hamilton in driving, and Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes has responded to the same.

Wolff said that he does not want to make a distinction between the two drivers so early, afterall, the car has become competitive only after the recent Spanish Grand Prix, so it might as well take Hamilton some time to get used to the car and have better finishes.

“I can only laugh at that,” Wolff said about Russell surpassing Hamilton, as quoted by GPBlog.

“Sure, I understand all the fuss that is made about our team, but those are connections that are blown up, especially by the media

“All that matters to me is that George and Lewis are pushing each other and that we are making progress. Russell is doing really well and that’s why we brought him in,” he concluded.

So as it seems as of now, Mercedes haven’t chosen any of the drivers as their number one driver, and they hope for both of them to have greeter finishes, bringing in more points for the team, and themselves.
