Lewis Hamilton shares the story of how he had to walk out of Top Gun because of F1 commitments
Many a times, fans have noticed famous Hollywood actor Tom Cruise cheering on Lewis Hamilton from the Mercedes pit at some of the Grands Prix. In fact, Cruise appeared at the British GP this year and celebrated his 60th birthday while watching his friend take a podium finish at Silverstone. While Tom has appeared in F1, Lewis Hamilton has not yet starred in one.of Cruise’s films but he revealed that he had got the chance to. In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Lewis talked about how he was offered a role in Cruise’s blockbuster movie Top Gun, but he had to say no because of previous commitments.
Citing the reason that he was already busy with Formula 1 and had no time to prepare for his role in Top Gun, Lewis Hamilton said, “I’m a perfectionist. There just wasn’t time.” Lewis was given the role of a fighter pilot in the movie, and he had intially said yes since he has been a fan of the original 1986 Top Gun movie from his childhood days.
While talking about how he landed the role, Hamilton said, “Basically I’m a friend of Tom [Cruise]. One of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. He invited me to his set years ago when he was doing ‘Edge of Tomorrow’, and then we just built a friendship over time. When I heard the second one was coming out, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I have to ask him’. I said ‘I don’t care what role it is. I’ll even sweep something, be a cleaner in the back‘.”
Although the role was not of a cleaner, but a fighter pilot, Lewis still had to pass up the chance since he wanted to give all his efforts but failed to do so. Lewis’ schedule was already packed with F1 preparations at the time of the shoot, and he had to say no to the opportunity.
